GA on hold

[edit]

The article has plenty of sources and images, however I have put the article on hold for seven days until the following suggestions are fixed and information is cited.

  1. Wikilink or further explain: pneumonia, United States of America, malnutrition, fruit juice, strike, superintendent, sexual abuse, slingshots, pub, autopsy, manslaughter, trout, crayfish, coral reefs, mangroves, mango, banana, pawpaw, wild plum trees, flash flood, sewage treatment plant, butcher, petrol, X-ray, ambulance, pharmacy, antenatal,
  2. There seems to be a hard return between Kukamunburra remains returned & 'Penal settlement' 1920s-60s; remove it. fixed
  3. In the 'Penal settlement' 1920s-60s section, I'm not sure if Government is supposed to be capitalized in the third paragraph. If is, ignore this suggestion. Ignored
  4. In the 'Penal settlement' 1920s-60s section again, a lot of the sentences begin with "In 19xx"; reword the statements to give them more variety. fixed
  5. For the many instance of a full date (listing the month, day, & year) wikilink it. fixed
  6. "A riot erupted.[21]" Statement's a little short, see if you can add it to another sentence or elaborate on it. fixed
  7. Add a period in the third paragraph after the last sentence in the Geography section. fixed
  8. "Cyclones As an island in North Queensland Palm Island is vulnerable to cyclones." Either remove the cyclones or make it a subheading (if you do make it a subheading, you should elaborate on the section more). fixed
  9. Crayfish is one word in the Natural environment and cyclones section but in the economy section it's two words. Use the correct choice. Also in the economy section, put the second sentence in one of the other paragraphs or expand on it. Single sentences should not stand alone.fixed
  10. Aquaculture is not capitalized. fixed
  11. "The farm is purported to have cost $20million. Put space between 20 and million. fixed
  12. "Palm Island has an extreme level of theft, domestic violence, sexual assaults against children and abject drunkenness, this behaviour is attributed to boredom, aimlessness, lack of education, absence of role models and a complete loss of self-worth." Break it up into two sentences and add inline citations. Fixed, move citations needed to below
  13. "The Justice group has a statutory role with the courts in administering justice[41] and is funded by the Queensland Government as a way of trying to keep indigenous children on Palm out of the criminal justice system, the program was created in response to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody." Split into two sentences.
  14. "In the three years after the Community Justice Group was established Palm Island juveniles appearing before magistrates courts fell by a third." Add comma after established and add inline citation. fixed
  15. "The Coolgaree nippers club is the first indigenous club in Surf Lifesaving Queensland, Coolgaree is affiliated to Arcadian surf lifesaving club in the first year of the nippers club operating (1999) juvenile crime rates on Palm Island dropped from 186 offences to 99." Use semicolon after Queenland. fixed
  16. "QC investigated alcohol abuse in indigenous communities and was shocked by the extent of the State-wide problem, he recommended to the Queensland Government that unless things improved dramatically within a period of three years than alcohol should be banned in consultation with the communities." Split into two sentences. Add inline citation., Split, moved to citations
  17. The Sports section should be epanded upon, look to other countries/cities for examples. added
  18. "The island has two schools; St Michael's Catholic School (Prep to grade 7) and the Bwgcolman Community School {Prep to Grade 10)." Use colon after schools, and switch the { to a ( for Prep to Grade 10. fixed
  19. "In 2004 the army completed $10 million worth of work constructing roads and a permanent water-supply dam on the island." Add to another paragraph or elaborate, don't let it stand alone. fixed
    • If any of my grammar suggestions are incorrect, it's because I'm going by American English, so please correct any suggestions according to Queensland English.

Add inline citations for:

  • The rest of the circus group carried on to the European leg of the tour, by the end of 1885 only three of the Murris were still alive.
  • The 55th Seabee Construction Battalion created a 1000 person camp and would house 12 flying boats and store 60,000 gallons of fuel and would repair an average of 4 aircraft per day. (Also change "1000 person" to "1000-person". The statement should also be reworded or possibly broken up into two.) fixed, already cited
  • Zen Pearls Pty Ltd and Indian Pacific Pearls Pty Ltd (both controlled by Michael Crimp) established pearl farms in 1998 with the permission of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (which controls the sea waters around the islands), despite the opposition of the people of Palm Island.
  • The Australian Army made a significant effort to clean up the island during 1997.
  • These restrictions include a limit of on.e carton of beer disembarking from the ferry service
  • Alcohol sales from the canteen are again restricted to one carton per person, or per vehicle.
  • However, there are various conflicting local estimates of the population size; up to 4,000 residents has been estimated with the most commonly used figure being 3,500. info changed and new sources added
  • In 1979 an outbreak of hepatoenteritis, known as the Palm Island mystery disease, was reported and described a hepatitis-like illness (associated in many cases with dehydration and bloody diarrhoea) in 138 children and 10 adults of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Palm Island has an extreme level of theft, domestic violence, sexual assaults against children and abject drunkenness
  • This behaviour is attributed to boredom, aimlessness, lack of education, absence of role models and a complete loss of self-worth.
  • QC investigated alcohol abuse in indigenous communities and was shocked by the extent of the State-wide problem
  • He recommended to the Queensland Government that unless things improved dramatically within a period of three years than alcohol should be banned in consultation with the communities.
  • Palm Island community council relied on revenue generated by alcohol sales at the community canteen, the investigation report recommended this perceived conflict of interest end.

Fix these in seven days and I'll pass the article. If you don't think that you can complete these in time, let me know, and I'll fail it for now so you can renominate it later when the requested changes are fixed. Otherwise let me know when you finish or if you have any questions on my talk page. --Nehrams2020 05:46, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA passed

[edit]

Excellent work on fixing all of the suggestions and adding citations. Make sure that all new information that is added to the article is sourced, helping the article keep its good quality. Keep looking to expand it and consider looking into FAC guidelines. As a side note, GAC currently has a large backlog that could use experienced editors' help. Even if you only rate one or two articles, that would be great. Keep up the good work, and continue to improve the article. --Nehrams2020 03:20, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New sub article

[edit]

The article is becoming too long and we will need to create some sub articles soon, obviously the History/Notable events section is the most dominant and ready to be moved to a new article and summarised for the main article. This is not a task I'm looking forward to :) What do people think of History of Palm Island, Queensland? WikiTownsvillian 09:08, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WikiTownsvillian. I'm all for the split you are suggesting. But write the summary which will stay here, before you create the new article. Garrie 00:07, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

move article

[edit]

What are people's thoughts about moving this article to Great Palm Island and redirect Palm Island, Queensland, and Great Palm Island, Queensland? Great Palm Island seems to be the official name while Palm Island is the commonly known name. I use this document, page 1, as the source. I suggest dropping the "Queensland" as there is probably not another island called Great Palm Island. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 09:05, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My intial thought is no, Palm Island is the commmon name and while Great Palm Island might be technically correct, isn't there a guideline to name articles by there most common usage? --Steve (Stephen) talk 23:20, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know actually, would be interested to find out, will look into it over the next day or two. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 23:54, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Naming conventions. "Names of Wikipedia articles should be optimized for ... a general audience over specialists." --Steve (Stephen) talk 00:18, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was confused for a while that both the island and the settlement were called "Palm Island".  My vote is to call this article "Great Palm Island, Queensland".  That leaves room for another article about the settlement called "Palm Island, Queensland".  Those names are consistent with the Google map.  But "Great Palm Island" works for me, too. Unscintillating (talk) 04:29, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've created a new article Great Palm Island, Queensland as previously discussed here. The new article only needed the "Geography" and the "Natural Environment and Cyclones" sections from the existing article, along with the island infobox, leaving all of the history here. I'll be figuring out next how to redirect the existing Great Palm Island to the new article. BTW, reliable references including from the Australia government use the name "Great Palm Island" on maps for the name of the island. Unscintillating (talk) 04:44, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The article on the island should be at Great Palm Island. Mandatory disambiguation is only inflicted on settlements and geographic features are spared and can use their common sense "plain" name, without appending the state at the end. Good work on the split but don't forget to fix this article to make it clear that this is about the settlement and not the island. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 05:08, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This wasn't about disambiguation, it was a style choice.  Being stateside, "Great Palm Island" may be globally unique, but it is also globally anonymous.  Adding the ", Queensland" is also consistent with "Palm Island, Queensland".  But like I said earlier, "Great Palm Island" also works for me. Thanks for supporting and moving the split forward, the lede was the tough part.  The bad news is that this split has only reduced the Article by 7K. New images

[edit]

Hi all, are there any suggestions as to how to go about getting as many of these images in as possible? there's not many natural places to put them where they link to the text so do you think it would be alright to just spatter them across the article? Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 10:49, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Standardise Murri/Indigenous Australians/Aboriginals

[edit]

Hi all, what are your thoughts about standardising throughout the article how Indigenous Australians broadly in Queensland are referred to. I would suggest that "Murri" or "the Murri people" would be the most appropriate, and in the lead when it is first mentioned put in brackets: (otherwise known as Indigenous Australians or Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders). What do people think? WikiTownsvillian 10:37, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article has been reviewed as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force. I believe the article currently meets the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. The article history has been updated to reflect this review. I set up this section to cover the transition period between the settlement being a penal settlement to having its own self governing local council. I have unfortunately not put any info into this section yet but the history of Palm is incomplete without covering this two decade period; it is an important part of their recent history and of course Indigenous history generally. Particularly in the 'Path to self governance' section I refer to compensation paid for "underpaid wages between 1975 and 1986", if anyone can find more info about this it would be appreciated. Cheers, WikiTownsvillian 15:18, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Becasue of the lack of connection between the referendum and Palm Island history so far - I have taken that ref out. I will reorder so the 1999 compensation fits in the self-governemnt section. I agree there is obviously a gap in history but I don't have info to fill it. --Matilda talk 00:59, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gone for a Song

[edit]

A new book has come out about the 2004 Death in Custody, a bit of info about it has been added recently by an anon. The book is about 250 pages long and is obviously fairly in-depth. It is by Jeff Waters who is an ABC journalist.

The book has 12 pages of 'Sources' at the back, included in that list of sources is this Wikipedia article. WikiTownsvillian 05:43, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also (and this is a bit exciting) the image Palm Island Jetty that I sourced and uploaded last year and which is now at the top of the article has been modified and used as the image for the front cover of the book!
They have cropped it, coloured the image to be red and black only and added clouds to it. Just goes to show how far your work can travel under the GNU Free Documentation License system :) WikiTownsvillian 06:00, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Impressive! Great work mate :) Orderinchaos 09:21, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you get a cut of the royalties for image sourcing? I undid the anon's additions as there was considerable editorialising in the additions. Are you going to get a copy of the book? It's about time we made the final push to get this to FA, what do you think? --Stephen 01:23, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have emailed Jeff (via his PR agent) to see if he has any material to add to the article. --Stephen 01:47, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As you probably know, anything on wikipedia is released from any obligation of royalties even if it is used for commercial purposes. However I did contact the person who took the photo to let him know about it, apparently the publishers did contact him and seek permission to use the image, which was nice of them considering they were not under an obligation to do so. He is also acknowledged in the book as being the author of the photo which again is great.
I would be very happy to be a part of a push for FA for this article. Cheers, WikiTownsvillian 00:06, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PS yes I picked up a copy of the book. WikiTownsvillian 00:08, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2020 update and new GAR review

[edit]

I found this article not only very out of date and bogged down in detail pertaining to who said what in the noughties, but confused and confusing as to what belongs in which article. As it turns out, nearly everything about the history and people belongs in the Great Palm Island article, so I moved it there and did some updating. Both articles still need work (I have a few more sources to use on Great Palm still, to bring it up to date a bit), but I think that the logic and layout is clearer now: Palm Island is the locality and/or island group, and Great Palm (which is usually just referred to as Palm Island) carries most of the detail, and Fantome a different history. However, probably no longer qualifies for GAR (still out-of-date, and now much less content)? Is it worth considering renaming this and Great Palm Island articles? (I don't know enough about the locality articles so I'm not going to propose or suggest anything there.) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 10:03, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. I'm still not sure about what I left of "Notable events". I think maybe only the Pearl farming bit belongs in this article. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 10:11, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rate Attribute Review Comment
1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct. Yes, article has good prose and grammar
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation.
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline.
  • Reference 3 appears to be an outmoded reference for pilots of aircraft
  • Reference 12 mentions that Palm Island is a restricted area and has alcohol restrictions. This should be included in the article.
  • At Reference 13, GBRMPA needs to be spelled out.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose).
  • Table 1, column heading Brushfire risk is mis-spelling; should be Bushfire risk. (It links to the bushfire article, and the reference is for a map indicating bushfire risk, not brushfire.
2c. it contains no original research.
  • Reference 23 is to a novel about Tall Man, and does not link to material about the Dreamtime.

2d. it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism.
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style). There is discussion on the talk page about this article and Great Palm Island article as information on this page was recently moved to Great Palm Island. There is a strong claim to merging these pages.
  • Pageviews: 7,501 in last 90 days. Daily average is 82.
  • Great Palm Island, in last 90 days: 2,404 Daily average is 26.
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content.
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions.
7. Overall assessment. This page moves a lot of extremely violent and troubled history away this page to other articles. A more thorough capture of that material should appear on this page. Also, as this island is an alcohol restricted area, it is unclear if this island is suitable for tourism, and there is no comment to this effect on this page. --Whiteguru (talk) 08:05, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]

Hi Whiteguru and Kerry Raymond. I have, I think, addressed all of the issues mentioned above save the overlap with Great Palm Island. It was I who greatly expanded the latter article and shuffled bits out of this article, as the histories overlapped and it was somewhat muddled, what related to governance, what related to the physical island, and what related to the inhabitants (who are all on Great Palm apart from a few resort workers on Orpheus). One of the problems is that in this article we have two overlapping entities, the locality (and Kerry is the expert on that designation - I only know what I have read in the article about this kind of entity) and the physical/geographical group of islands, called the Palm Island group or Greater Palm group, which in this case coincide. The usual convention for geographic entities is to put the state in parentheses afterwards, whereas with localities it follows a comma, and I assume the comma convention was deliberately chosen in this case. To complicate things (as you both no doubt know), governance of the island group is split between two governing bodies, the Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island, and the Shire of Hinchinbrook, which is mostly on mainland Queensland but does include Orpheus, with the tourist resort.
It doesn't surprise me that this article gets more hits, firstly because it's the common name for Great Palm Island and so that's what people look for, and secondly because most sources are at best fuzzy about what they're referring to, when in fact the whole article is almost without exception devoted to the one island. I think that it would be somewhat misleading, and take a lot of work to merge the two articles, but I'm not sure what the best solution is. I tinkered with Palm Island (disambiguation) in an attempt to improve that, although not sure if what I've saved is the best arrangement. What about creating a DAB page for Palm Island, Queensland, and renaming this one to Palm Island, Queensland (locality)? That would also entail a fair bit of work, but I suspect that most of the links in to Palm Island currently should probably be transferred to Great Palm.
As an aside, I'm just wondering whether this article belongs in the Archipelagoes of Australia category as well? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:59, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Laterthanyouthink: Groan, Queensland local government areas, towns, localities, islands and island groups have complex inter-relationships as you have observed. If I sit in front of Queensland Globe, I can generally work out what's what and, if not, I have a contact in the relevant Qld Govt department who can usually set me straight. But it is a little hard to explain without Qld Globe in front of us. But I will try:

Let's start at the beginning. There is an island group officially known as Palm Islands (plural) for which we don't appear to have a Wikipedia article, but if we did, it would be called Palm Islands (Queensland).

https://www.resources.qld.gov.au/qld/environment/land/place-names/search#/search=palm&types=0&place=Palm_Islands25880

Looking in Qld Globe, this appears to be 12 named islands with Pelorus Island at the north and Havannah Island at the south and in the middle is the biggest island called

Great Palm Island

https://www.resources.qld.gov.au/qld/environment/land/place-names/search#/search=*palm&types=0&place=Great_Palm_Island14716

which is commonly known as Palm Island, which is not ambiguous as there is no other *island* in Queensland called Palm Island, so you could have Palm Island (Queensland) as a redirect to Great Palm Island or vice versa without any angst, as the locality is called Palm Island, Queensland given our usual way to distinguish between natural and man-made places with parens or comma.

On the island called Great Palm Island, there is a town on the western coast called "Palm Islands" (plural).

https://www.resources.qld.gov.au/qld/environment/land/place-names/search#/search=palm%20islands&types=0&place=Palm_Islands25881

Again we have no Wikipedia naming issue as this should be called Palm Islands, Queensland and this currently redirects to Palm Island, Queensland, where no mention is made of the town at all and I think it should be mentioned.

Now all of the islands in the group were once in Shire of Hinchinbrook and the locality of Palm Island which included all 12 islands and sea immediately around them and between them. When a Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) was established, the normal practice was to excise the land in the DOGIT from the original local government and establish a new local government area for the DOGIT. Now a lot of these are a straightforward single chunk of land "cut out" of another local government area which surrounds them. However, islands pose a challenge as local government areas and localities can include sea as well as land. And for reasons I don't fully understand the DOGITs appear to be only for "land" and not include "sea", so 10 of the 12 *islands* (including Great Palm Island) were excised from Shire of Hinchinbrook and placed in the Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island but the other two islands and the sea immediately around and between all of the islands remains in the Shire of Hinchinbrook. Since localities can be split between local government areas in Queensland normally, this is exactly what happened here, just in a more messy way.

So looking at the lede para in Palm Island, Queensland, I think it is correct as stated. While Great Palm Island does explain it is in the Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island, it makes no mention of being part of the locality of Palm Island, Queensland. Nor does it make any mention of the town and I think it should be mentioned. It's an interesting question as to whether the town Palms Islands, Queensland should redirect to the locality Palm Island, Queensland or Great Palm Island. When we don't have a separate article for a town, it is normal to redirect it to the locality article where a brief discussion of the town can be made. But normally we don't have a finer granularity article available, but in this case Great Palm Island is a more fine-grained article than Palm Island, Queensland. I would be inclined to redirect the town Palms Islands, Queensland to the island article Great Palm Island and discuss the town there, and mention in the locality article Palm Island, Queensland that there is a town called Palm Islands on Great Palm Island and link across to it there. Speaking from experience there is always *something* to say about a town ... a quick look at the "usual sources" shows me that the town of Palm Islands has two schools, a post office, a supermarket, a jetty, a boat ramp, council buildings, a library (known as the Bwgcolman Indigenous Knowledge Centre), police station, ambulance station, wastewater treatment plant -- heaps of things to say about this town!

Finally to come back to where I started. The island group article Palm Islands (Queensland) doesn't exist but I think it can be trivially redirected to the locality article Palm Island, Queensland as the two encompass the same set of islands and the sea around and between them. Just for completeness.

I appreciate the interrelationships between these things are tricky to explain but there is no rule that it has to be explained in a single sentence. If it takes some paras, a list, a diagram, a map (you can use Open Street Map as a base -- it is CC-BY licenced) or whatever to explain it, then do it that way. If we locals can find it confusing, I am sure the rest of the world will be even more confused. My tip is to add in the necessary feature type whenever you have to talk about the things with the same/similar names. E.g. the town of Palm Islands is on the island Great Palm Island which is one of the however-many islands in the locality of Palm Island which is an administrative boundary that corresponds with the island group Palm Islands. And always link tht first use of locality. It may not make people less confused but at least it highlights that the term "locality" has an extremely precise meaning in Australia and people should disable their normal meaning for that term.

Finally if you get the Palm Islands figured out, feel free to go on and tackle the Torres Stait. Exactly the same problems of island groups, islands, towns, localities, with multiple local government areas between land and sea etc. It does my head in! Kerry (talk) 08:25, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Kerry Raymond, thanks for your long explanation (and double groan!). I will come back to this when I have time and the fortitude to do so. I'll start with the easy bit - adding something about that town. What do you think of the idea of an additional DAB page? And yes, I have wandered into Torres Strait Islands a few times and backed out again quietly after adding my little bits... Laterthanyouthink (talk) 10:55, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Laterthanyouthink: given the number of things with similar-ish names, it might be a useful navigation add for the reader. But I would put all the Qld articles together, including the riot etc Kerry (talk) 11:54, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello Laterthanyouthink and Kerry Raymond. You have outlined a significant amount of work and matters that require clarification in addition to disabiguation and consideration of what can be merged or not. The name of the Island, as you clarify, does cause reader confusion; however there is material on both pages that warrant a merge and material that is missing, along with the confusion about the Shire of Hinchinbrook and the locality of Palm Island. I am going to delist the article as GA and watch. I hope I can be of some help. When you are ready, the page (or newly merged page) can be resubmitted. Go well. --Whiteguru (talk) 03:11, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Whiteguru. I'm not sure when I'll get back to attempting to sort out the whole mess, but I just started to have a look at various maps and locations in the main town on Great Palm Island. Kerry, I can see that link Queensland Place Names Search calls the population centre Palm Islands (plural), but I have yet to see another source that does the same. Google Maps and all addresses seem to label the town Palm Island, and this Shire Council web page just refers to "the main town". Mind you all of the addresses just have Palm Island as the place, and although there are various clusters of houses and buildings, the tiny Reservoir Ridge (mentioned on that web page) seems to be only one with a name. I will create that redirect for Palm Islands (Queensland), just for completeness as you suggest, and write up something about the town, but I'm still not convinced about the naming as the plural form. The Queensland Places Names database is authoritative (because the Qld Govt has the legislative authority to name Queensland places and nobody else does); the town is officially called "Palm Islands" until they say otherwise. This is not to say nobody ever made a mistake updating their database, and if you genuinely think there is a mistake, contact them and they will look into it and update it if they have it wrong. I note that Queensland Globe also calls it "Palm Islands". Google Maps is not authoritative. But there is not a problem to point out that it might be commonly called something else. The postcode will be for the locality. Kerry (talk) 04:31, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kerry. I was actually just about to come and add some info that I got back from the Queensland Places Names people, having emailed them on Tuesday. This is their reply:
"I have investigated where the name Palm Islands came from and what the name refers to.
Apparently, the name Palm Islands refers to the Palm Islands Settlement which was a reserve (R.216, Res.925) gazetted in 1938 and then again in 1973 as a "Reserve for The Benefit of the Aboriginal Inhabitants of the State". The Reserve covers parts of Curacoa, Esk, Falcon, Eclipse, Brisk, Havannah and Great Palm Islands. Therefore, the name appears to relate to the whole settlement area which covers several islands within the Palm Islands Group of islands and not just a single isolated town.
I have added this information to our Place Names data as you suggested."
– In other words, what Palm Island Aboriginal Settlement refers to (and this article will need a bit of work to clarify this, I think), although the email doesn't mention the 1914 gazetting, so I'll follow up on this. However, although they say the info has been added and it's dated 28 April, I cannnot see any new data in the description for Palm Islands even after clearing my cache. Let me know what it looks like to you. There's also this citation, which I have used in my recent editing: "In fact the main town on Palm Island doesn't actually have a name. Some locals still refer to it as the Mission.", according to that journalist. I'll chip away at it until we get it reliably sourced with the true version... @Laterthanyouthink: They reload the database at midnight, so you generally have to look the next day to see the change. But it is now the next day and I agree with you that what I see is "Last updated:28 April 2021", but nothing else seems to have changed. But what they have said isn't changing the name nor changing what they deem to the centre of the populated area (i.e. the coords), they are just saying it extends further than you might have expected. Normally I'd have expected to see some commentary to that effect in the comments though. By the way, this 1974 map shows what they are talking about (look at the text in the sea below Great Palm Island). So we can cite the map and, as it is CC-BY, we could upload it to Commons and include it. Kerry (talk) 05:30, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's a useful map, Kerry. I will get it uploaded and use it for both articles, when time permits. The Qld Archive record for the agency says: "Palm Island Aboriginal Settlement was gazetted as an Aboriginal reserve on 20 Jun 1914. ... The reserve was re-gazetted twice, in 1938 and in 1941, each time with the addition of a few surrounding smaller islands." - which goes some way to explaining perhaps why it was singular to start with and later became pluralised. I have written back to Place Names, so let's give it a day or two and see if anything further materialises there. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:52, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
